Paris, France, 10 September 2013 – Qosmos, a market leader in embedded Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and network intelligence technology, today announced that it will show a live demo of the world’s first virtual switch with embedded DPI at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, USA, 10 – 12 September. This is the first demonstration of a virtual switch with the built-in application intelligence required for tomorrow’s service-aware networking.
The demo features Qosmos ixEngine® integrated with the Intel® Data Plane Development Kit (Intel® DPDK) vSwitch, where Intel® DPDK ensures high packet processing performance and Qosmos provides application intelligence on Intel Architecture. The objective is to create a cost-effective software-based networking platform that enables network equipment providers with more advanced traffic steering, monitoring and QoS features in virtual networks as well as optimized service chaining for the telco, enterprise and datacenter markets.

The technical implementation: DPI in Open vSwitch
When developing software for switches – physical or virtual – one option is to deploy Open vSwitch, a production quality, multilayer virtual switch licensed under the open source Apache 2.0 license. Open vSwitch can operate both as a soft switch running within the hypervisor or as the control stack for switching silicon. Qosmos ixEngine gives Open vSwitch the visibility to:
- East-West traffic for virtual IP communications
- North-South traffic for communications with the physical network
- the App ID and metadata from traffic flows
Included in the demo is a reference implementation of the Qosmos ixEngine integrated in the Intel® DPDK Accelerated Open vSwitch which is compatible with all Intel® Architecture-based hardware platforms. Qosmos shares a flow table with the Intel DPDK and feeds App ID and metadata to networking applications for each traffic flow.
